The Al2O3/Ti3SiC2 multilayer materials were prepared by two methods. One is the in situ HP that means the Ti3SiC2 layer is in situ synthesized from the Ti, SiC and C powders during the preparation of the multilayer materials; the other is multistep that the pre-synthesized Ti3SiC2 powders are used to prepare multilayer materials. For the Al2O3/Ti3SiC2 multilayer materials by the two methods, work of fracture was improved by over tenfold than Al2O3 materials as well flexural strength keeping above 450MPa. Moreover, the different composition and microstructure was obtained by different preparation procedure, and of course some difference in mechanical properties also existed, such as the flexural strength of the multilayer materials by in situ HP was higher and the toughness was lower.
