Epoxy resin/montmorillonite (MMT) composites with excellent comprehensive mechanical properties were prepared viamelt-intercalation process. The shear strength of composite is 2 times higher than that of EP/PA matrix. Furthermore, the composite has good resistant properties for water and other media. TGA results indicate that the thermal stability of composite is slightly improved.

WANG Wen-jun, DONG Yu-ping. Chemical Modification of Polyvinyl Chloride via Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization Process[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2002, 0(4): 6-8.

Graft copolymers of poly (vinyl chloride) with butyl methacrylate were successfully synthesized viaATRP (Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization) process. Compared with the previous ones, the most obvious advantage of the above process was that through which there existed only graft copolymers in the consequent product, without either BMA homopolymers or PVC. Thermal analysis (DSC) revealed only one Tg for all copolymers. The Tg of graft copolymers decreased with increasing content of butyl methacrylate, which indicated that the toughness of the copolymers increased gradually.

The poly (vinyl chloride)/clay nanocomposites were successfully prepared through melt intercalation process. Their structures and properties were studied with X-ray diffraction and transmission electron micrographs. The results proved that poly (vinyl chloride) melt could be intercalated in original clay a little while could be well intercalated in organically modified clay. The presence of the alkyl ammonium cations in the galleries of organo-clay rendered the hydrophilic clay organic. The role of alkyl ammonium cations was to lower the surface energy of the inorganic clay and improve its wetting characteristic with poly (vinyl chloride). Mechanical properties testing showed that the nanocomposites were superior to poly (vinyl chloride) in terms of impact strength, heat distortion temperature, solvent transformation resistance without sacrificing its tensile strength.

ZHANG Li-xin, YANG Shi-qin, HE Shi-yu. Effect of Thermal Cycling on Tensile Properties of Space Grade Silicon Rubber in Vacuum[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2002, 0(4): 12-14.

The thermal cycling tests on the space grade silicon rubber were carried out in vacuum (123~403K, 10-5Pa). The weight loss rates, tensile and thermal expansion properties before and after cycling were measured. The thermal strain hysteresis and additional residual strains as well as their hardening effects on the materials were discussed for the first time. Results show that the weight loss rate is first increased and then keep unchanging with increasing cycles. The tensile strength at room and elevated temperature is first increased and then decreased with increasing cycles. The thermal strain hysteresis occurs in the cycling. The additional residual strain that is produced in the first cycle disappears after the 206th cycles with the hardening of the materials. When it reachs the 400th cycles, the residual strain is reproduced and the strength of the tested materials is decreased.

MA Zhuang, WANG Quan-sheng, WANG Fu-chi, LU Guang-shu. Substrate Influence on Residual Stress of Gradient Coating[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2002, 0(4): 15-18,37.

Finite element method was adopted in this paper to analyze substrate influence on residual stress of gradient coating when the substrate condition of gradient coating was changing, but the structure of gradient coating was unchanged. The results show that the residual stress of gradient coating is affected remarkably by the thermal expansion coefficient of substrate material. For the columnar substrate, both the difference of interface residual stress between substrate and coating and the maximal axial tensile stress increase linearly with the increasing of the thermal expansion coefficient, however, the difference of interface between ceramic layer and the second layer decrease. To increase the diameter and the thickness of substrate can abate the residual stress of coating, and all kinds of residual stress are stable when the diameter of substrate is 36mm and the thickness is 20mm.

The crystallization behavior of electroless Ni-P and Ni-Cu-P was studied contrastively by using DSC and XRD. The results show that low-P Ni-P deposits transform to the stable phase Ni3P directly, but Ni-Cu-P deposits with low phosphorus content (high copper content) transform to the metastable phase Ni5P2 first, and then to the stable phase Ni3P. Both the amorphous Ni-12 1%P (mass fraction) and Ni-17.96%Cu-9.29%P deposits with high phosphorus content transform to the metastable phases Ni5P2 and Ni12P5 first, then to the stable phase Ni3P, but the temperatures of Ni-Cu-P deposits transforming to metastable phases are higher than that of Ni-P deposits.

The microstructure and composition of coating hot-dipped with Zn-5%Al alloy were analyzed in this paper. Special crystal grain and amorphous transition structure were discovered in the coating. This transition microstructure is very corrosion resistance. It successfully reduced the corrosion rate between the crystals which demonstrated the superior corrosion resistance of Zn-5%Al coating.

ZHANG Hua, LI Huai-xiang. Research on Electrophoretic Behavior of Porous Silicon Suspended in Toluene[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2002, 0(4): 27-29,37.

The electrophoretic behavior of porous silicon (PS) suspended in toluene has been discovered and studied. The toluene suspension was prepared by ultrasonication of anodically etched n porous silicon wafers with resistivities of 80~100Ω•cm. It has been found that porous silicon particles drift inversely in the external electric field and adhere to the surface of positive electrodes, such as Pt, p+-Si, indium-tin oxide (ITO) glass etc. There is a linear relationship between the photoluminescence (PL) intensity and the PS concentration of the suspension. The influence factors of PL intensity of the PS suspension, such as deposition time and applied electric field intensity, were examined in detail. The morphology of the deposited PS film and as prepared PS has been measured using scanning electron microscope (SEM). X- ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR) have been used to analyze the deposited PS films.

The variation of plateau stress of a pseudoelastic NiTi shape memory alloy during constrained heating was investigated by use of a materials test machine. The results show that the upper and lower plateau stresses, which correspond to the forward and reverse martensitic transformations, respectively, increase upon constrained heating, and the increasing velocity of the upper plateau stress is less than that of the lower plateau stress; When the temperature exceeds a certain value, the upper plateau stress curve becomes identical with the lower one. The phase transformation behaviors corresponding to the two plateau stresses during constrained heating are discussed.

A de-core method for hollow turbine blades having complex inner cavity has been studied. It is showed that the combination of a high pressure water-jeting method with the original chemically etching method may effectively eliminate the residual core in the inner passage of blades. The suitable processing parameters are obtained by a series of experiments.

XING Li-ying, ZHANG Zuo-guang. The Development of Structural Absorbing Composites[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2002, 0(4): 48-51.

The development of structural absorbing composites is presented in this paper. It shows that there is large gap in research and application of structural absorbing composites at home and abroad. Based on the development of structural absorbing composites and the experimental results of the electromagnetic properties of reinforced fibers used in composites, the author thinks that the development of high properties fibers is important to develop high property structural absorbing composites.
