Effect of ion bombardment energy on microstructure, surface roughness, elasticity, hardness and friction coefficient of the diamond-like carbon (DLC) films deposited by ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) has been studied. The DLC films with good mechanical and tribological properties have been obtained. The relationship between microstructure and properties has also been discussed. It has been found and analyzed that there is difference between the value of knoop microhardness and nanohardness of the same series of DLC films.

With the established model, the evaporation controlling mode as well as the evaporation rate of Al and Sn during ISM process of Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy was studied. The results show that the evaporation of Al and Sn is controlled by the evaporating reaction under the practical melting condition. The effect of the vacuum pressure on the evaporation rate appears to have a critical value. When the vacuum pressure is lower than the critical value, the evaporation rate does not change with the vacuum pressure, but when the vacuum pressure is higher than it, the evaporation rate decreases sharply to a minimum.

The β-transus temperature and the composition at different areas in BT36 ware determined by means of optical metallographic observation and SEM in this paper. The results show that the β-transus temperature of BT36 alloy is 980℃ and some lamellar structures are located at equiaxial matrix after α+β phase area heat treated. The lamella has lower aluminium and higher molybdenum and tungsten content compared to the matrix due to the alloying elements can′t be homogeneously distributed in the course of melting.

LUO Wei. Effect of Arc Surface Remelting on the Corrosion Resistance of 0Cr19Ni9 TIG Welding Joint[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2000, 0(2): 13-15.

The corrosion resistance of the 0Cr19Ni9 tungsten inert-gas (TIG) arc welding joints with and without 4A micro-plasma arc surface remelting was studied in this paper. The results show that the corrosion resistance of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the weld is decr eased compared with the base metal. It is found that after remelting, the microstructure is refined and the microsegregation is eliminated. As a result, the corrosion resistance of the joint is significantly improved.

WAN Yi-zao, WANG Yu-lin, DONG Xiang-hong, WANG Zhe-ren. Mechanical Properties and Fractographic Characteristic of Gelatin Material[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2000, 0(2): 19-21.

Influence of glutaraldehyde (cross-linker), glycerol (plasticizer) and gelatin concentrations on the mechanical properties of the gelatin material was investigated in this paper. Fracture surfaces of this material were observed. The results show that the mechanical properties of the gelatin material can be adjusted over a wide range by altering the contents of glutaraldehyde and glycerol. Great differences in fracture surface morphology were observed for samples with different break strains.

JIN Yan-ping, GU Ming-yuan, SHI Zhong-liang. Thermal Analyses of Zn-Al Alloy Matrix Composites[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2000, 0(2): 22-24.

The differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) was used to investigate the aging and melting behavior of Zn-23Al-2Cu alloy and its composites. The results show that due to the addition of reinforcements the aging kinetics of the alloy is accelerated and the quantity of the precipitate is decreased. The eutectoid point and the liquidus temperatures are almost not affected. Some eutectic phase is found in the composites. The reasons for the above effects are discussed.

The hardening characteristics of austenite stainless steel and Hadfield manganese steel of low stacking fault energy were investigated. Basing on the similarity of both two stress strain curves on hardening stage, we proposed that the curves were composed of matrix hardening, behavior softening and structure hardening. From that we explained the partial stress strain curve of upward curvature was resuled from the interaction of dominant softening and hardening. The similarity and difference in defomation process of two kinds of materials were discussed and the cause was analyzed.

Duplex coating technique of electroless nickel-phosphorus alloy plating and chromium electroplating has been applied to improve the corrosion resistance of the NdFeB magnets. The microstructure, corrosion resistance and other properties of the coating have been studied. The effects of the coating on magnetic properties have also been tested. It is found that the double layers of the coating have a dense structure and excellent corrosion resistance, and have no bad effects on magnetic properties.

The recovery process of the 18vol%SiCw/6061Al composites chips was investigated. Results shown that, by selecting the proper hot compression parameters (750℃/200MPa), the tensile strength of recovered composites has reached 85% of the original composite′s strength, and its elastic modulus is very close to that of original composites. The bonding among chips is good. Therefore the recovered composites has the reutilization value.

LUO Fa, ZHOU Wan-cheng, ZHAO Dong-lin. The Electric and Absorbing Wave Properties of Fibers in Structural Radar Absorbing Materials[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2000, 0(2): 37-40.

The electric and absorbing wave properties of fibers in structural radar absorbing material are reviewed. Glass fibers and Kevlar fibers are transparent to radar wave. Carbon fiber graphited at high temperatures strongly reflects the radar wave. Ungraphited carbon fiber reflects radar wave when it is parallel to the electric filed and absorbs radar wave when it is perpendicular or oblique to the electric filed. The radar wave absorption of SiC fiber is related to the fiber′s composition and processing temperatures. During fabrication of SiCf/glass ceramic composites, reaction takes place between fiber and matrix. As a result, a carbon rich layer interface is formed. It facilitates the radar wave absorption of the composites.

XIAO Peng, XU Yong-dong, ZHANG Li-tong. Study of Processing of High Temperature Ceramic Matrix Composites[J]. Journal of Materials Engineering, 2000, 0(2): 41-44.

The main processing techniques used to fabricate high temperature ceramic matrix composites reinforced by continuous fibers involve two technique routes of using liquid and gas phase as precursor. The aim of the present contribution is to give an overview of the most employed or promising processes. The results show that the near net shape processing techniques at low temperatures/pressures,and displaying both a high flexibitity and a low cost, are preferred.
